Former under 20 captain and Black Stars forward Andre Morgan Dede Ayew has admitted that the African Cup of Nations 2019 which will be hosted by Egypt will be very difficult because of the increment of teams from 16 to 24 in the 3nd edition of the competition.
Ghana has booked their ticket to Egypt 2019 and this is the 22nd time Ghana have qualified to the African Cup of Nations wining four trophies out of their overall participation in the AFCON competition with the last gold coming in 1982 after beating host nation Libya on penalties 7-6 after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Ghanians all over the country are hoping that the team end their 37 years of trophy drought after coming close in 1992 ,2010,2105 loosing to La Cote D’Ivoire on two occasions and Egypt in 2010 and Andrew Ayew thinks that it will be very difficult after the team have been increased by CAF from 16 to 24 teams because they won’t get enough rest after match days before they play another.
Addressing the press after Ghana’s 3-1 win over Mauritania , Ayew said ‘’ i think it makes it more difficult because when it was 16 we had about five to six days of rest but now when you look at it and you calculate the days that the tournament is going to be played, you will be playing every three days so you will need to be very fit, have a good rest and a good training’’.
‘’It is going to be very demanding and hectic because i think we finish the group stages before we move to the quarter finals we always had some few days where you could rest and get back but now i don’t think that we will have that time to rest. So it will be difficult for us and difficult for the opponent so it a new philosophy from CAF so we need to adapt ourselves and be ready for it’’. Andrew Ayew added.
Mean Andre Morgan Ayew becomes the seventh most highest caped player for the Black Stars of Ghana with Captain Asamoah Gyan being the most caped player with 106 appearance for the black Stars.
